National Symposium on New Criminal Law
The Department of Criminal Law of Saveetha School of Law, successfully conducted the 1st National Symposium on New Criminal Laws: Challenges and Opportunities for the Bar and Bench on July 18th and 19th, 2024.
The symposium opened with an insightful address by Hon'ble Justice J. Chelameshwar, who highlighted the critical aspects and implications of the new criminal laws, emphasizing their potential to transform the legal landscape. Adv. Narmada Sampath, Former Additional Advocate General of the Madras High Court, discussed the historical context and evolution of these laws, while Dr. D. Radhika Yadav, Principal of the University College of Law at Osmania University, examined their impact on legal education and the future generation of lawyers. The inaugural speeches focused on the significant changes in criminal law and their advantages and drawbacks.
On the second day, a panel discussion was held featuring Dr. Raja Narayana Swamy, Principal Secretary of Legislative Affairs, Government of Kerala, Prof. K. Bala Krishnan from NULAS Kochi, and Prof. Raghu Raman. The session, moderated by Adv. Karthik Varun of the Madras High Court, delved into the nuances of the new laws and their implications for legal practitioners and the judiciary. The panelists explored the comprehensive changes introduced by the new criminal laws and their anticipated effects on both the bar and bench.
Simultaneously, the symposium hosted poster presentations and concept map presentations, allowing students to showcase their understanding and research on the new laws. The best presentations were recognized and awarded, highlighting the depth of analysis and creativity among the participants.
