Pro Bono Club

The Pro Bono Club (PBC) functions under the Nyaya Bandhu Scheme of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India. The Nyaya Bandhu (Pro Bono Legal Services) Scheme is the flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at building a robust and accessible platform for providing pro bono (free of cost) legal services across the country. Through this initiative, practicing advocates who are registered as Pro Bono Advocates and are committed to offering voluntary legal services are connected with eligible marginalized beneficiaries through an integrated mobile-based technology platform.

The Pro Bono Club at Saveetha School of Law, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS), Chennai, has been established with the objective of strengthening the culture of pro bono service among future legal professionals. The club actively aligns with the mission of the Nyaya Bandhu Scheme by engaging law students in meaningful legal service initiatives and promoting the spirit of social responsibility within the legal fraternity.

Members of the club are designated as Pro Bono Associates (PBAs). They assist registered Pro Bono Advocates in handling pro bono cases facilitated through the Nyaya Bandhu platform. Through this engagement, students gain practical exposure to legal aid processes while contributing to the broader goal of ensuring access to justice for underserved communities.

The activities of the Pro Bono Club are strategically designed to fulfil multiple objectives and are carried out through the following key initiatives:

Pro Bono Litigation Assistance (PBLA): Supporting advocates in pro bono litigation matters and assisting in case preparation and documentation.

  • Community Care Legal Assistance (CCLA): Conducting legal awareness programs, outreach initiatives, and community engagement activities to enhance legal literacy among marginalized groups.

  • Research, Documentation and Reporting: Undertaking research and maintaining systematic documentation of pro bono activities, case assistance, and legal aid initiatives.

  • Promotion of Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR): Encouraging mediation, conciliation, and other ADR mechanisms as effective tools for dispute resolution and community justice.

Through the Pro Bono Club, Saveetha School of Law reaffirms its commitment to nurturing socially responsible legal professionals who combine academic excellence with a strong dedication to social justice, community engagement, and equitable access to legal services.

Steps to Register as a Pro Bono Advocate:

  1. Download the Nyaya Bandhu App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

  2. Create an account by entering the required personal details and Bar enrolment information.

  3. Verify your account through the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

  4. Once registered, select the pro bono cases you are willing to take up through the portal.

Steps to Register as an Applicant (To Avail Free Legal Services)

  1. Confirm your eligibility to receive pro bono legal services under the scheme.

  2. Download the Nyaya Bandhu App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

  3. Create an account by providing your personal details.

  4. Upload the required documents or proof of eligibility to request legal assistance.
