Report of Expert Lecture Series on Wellbeing as a Fundamental Right: Exploring the Role of Yoga in Human Rights Law, 18th June 2025
The Departments of Constitutional Law and Physical Education are proud to have organized an Expert Lecture Series on the theme “Wellbeing as a Fundamental Right: Exploring the Role of Yoga in Human Rights Law” on 18th June 2025. This academic event was conducted as part of our continued efforts to integrate constitutional values with co-curricular engagement and was held in conjunction with the global observance of International Yoga Day on 21st June.
The objective of this event was to highlight the intrinsic connection between holistic wellbeing and the fundamental rights framework, particularly as embodied in Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty. Over the years, the judiciary has expansively interpreted Article 21 to include the right to health, dignity, a clean environment, mental peace, and overall wellbeing.
Yoga, an ancient Indian practice, transcends mere physical exercise and represents a comprehensive system for achieving physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balance. It is increasingly recognized not just as a tool for personal health but also as a means to promote human dignity, peace, and inner freedom, which are essential components of fundamental human rights. Ten faculty members from different universities delivered expert lectures in ten lecture halls, benefiting 300 students.
