Two Day International Conference on “Protection of Child Rights: Problems and Prospects”

The two day international conference on Protection of Child Rights started with the inaugural function on 3rd March 2019, with Prof. Dr. M.A.D.S. J. S. Niriella, Professor, Department of Public and International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and Dr. MWIRIGI K CHARLES, Jerusalem University, Post Doctoral Fellow, School of Law, Christ University as the chief guest and Prof. Dr. Asha Sundaram, Principal, Saveetha School of Law as the Patron. The event started with the prayer song “Tamil Thai Vazhthu”, and it was continued by lighting up of Kuthuvilaku by the dignitaries on the stage. The inaugural note was rendered by Prof. Dr. Asha Sundaram, who threw the light on need for recognising the rights of children. The dignitaries were honoured by Prof. Dr. Asha Sundaram. The chief guest of the day, Dr. Charles spoke on growing abuse towards the children and their rights. The chief guest of the day in his intellectual speech helped the participants understand the global standards set in protection of child rights. Dr. Niriella delivered the key note address focusing on the victim of abuse. The extinguished guest of the day brought the role of government and social activists in protecting the rights of children.

The inaugural session was followed by technical session with the resource person’s presentations by Dr. Anuja, Assistant Professor, Coordinator, ENVIS Centre on Environmental Law and Policy sponsored by Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate change, NLSIU, Bengaluru and Dr. Sathish Gowda, Assistant Professor of Law, P.G. Department of Studies and Research in Law, University Law College, Jnanabharathi Campus, Bangalore University, Bangalore, Karnataka. Both the resource persons was felicitated by Prof. Dr. Asha Sundaram , Principal, SSL. Dr. Sathish Gowda highlighted on widening the aspects of Article 21 of Indian Constitution in protecting the rights of children. He also spoke on the view of judiciary in rights of children. Dr. Anuja spoke on gender disperheria, the guest also spoke on need for the replacement of the term sex with gender identity.

The paper and poster presentations were presented by presenters from various institutions on the themes specified by the conference protocol. The paper presentation helped the students understand the different views and prospects in the trends of child rights.

The comments rendered by the chair person helped the students know, analyse and criticise the legislations in protection of child rights. The second day of this conference was started with the resource person’s presentations by Ms. Harini Ramanujam, CEO, Madras Dyslexia Association, Dr. Aneesh V. Pillai, Assistant Professor (Law), School of Legal Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kalamassery, Kochi, Kerala and Dr. Haritha Devi, Assistant Professor, School of Excellence, Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. Ms. Harini Ramanujam spoke on counselling dyslexic children and legal approach towards such children. Dr. Aneesh V Pillai insisted on surrogacy and rights of children born out of surrogacy, highlighting the latest legislative intents. Dr. Haritha Devi presentation was based on the rationale for determining extent of child rights and role of parents and educators in protecting rights of children. It was followed by the paper presentation from various institutions. This conference received 45 papers, 5 posters and 2 short films from various institutions. Nearly 140 participants participated in this international conference on child rights.

Prashant Mali who had conducted an awareness programme on “Cyber Security and Cyber crimes via Real life cases, precautions and remedies“ at Saveetha School of Law, SIMATS, Chennai on Saturday (2nd march, 2019). The session was organised for law students and academicians of Saveetha School of law and nearby colleges. Around 100 attendees from Chennai, Kerala and Madurai participated in the event. Mr. Mali visited city as part of his #cybervoayage campaign to raise awareness about cyber crimes.

Online Memorial Writing Competition

Saveetha School of Law has stepped forward with the initiative of organizing “1st National Online Memorial Writing Competition 2019” which is emerging as a flagship program of our institution aiming at imparting the students with a real-life acquaintance of LEGAL RESEARCH. 

The Moot Problem for this competition was based on “LGBTQI”. This competition aims basic skills for every budding advocate, particularly Legal research and application of law. This was an ONLINE EVENT where we received 62 memorials across India from various National Law Schools and Other Law Institutions. These memorials were reviewed and adjudged by the eminent scholars and top 10 memorial were awarded with E-certificate of Merit & all other participants received E-certificate of participation. 

Sasmitha from Law Center 2, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi awarded  3000 as Winner of the competition. Sai Hasitha and Ayush Kumar Jain from Presidency University, Bangalore was awarded 1500 as Runner-up of the competition.

Refugee Populations in India and South East Asia: The Role of the State in Crisis Mitigation

In view of the grave refugee crisis obtaining in many parts of the world currently, a special lecture had been organized by the Department of Criminal Law and Human Rights of the Saveetha School of Law,  on “Refugee Populations in India and South East Asia: The Role of the State in Crisis Mitigation”. Dr. George Richards, who works as an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice, Edinboro University, had delivered this lecture on 22nd February, 2019. It was attended by nearly 80 students of SSL. 

In his lecture, Dr. George Richards had focused on a wide range of areas relating to the situation of refugees. These included (among others); International legal regime on refugees; Refugee crisis- Current global trends ; Indian position on refugees; Role and Functions of UN High Commissioner for Refugees; His personal field experience obtained during his visits to refugee camps; Indian Organizations working in the field of refugees.

International Conference on Gender Based Discrimination

Saveetha School of law, SIMATS organized a One Day International Conference on Gender Based Discrimination in Workplace on 15th February 2019. International Conference started was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. Asha Sundaram, Chief Guest Ms. Ponni, Social Activist as well as Classical Dancer and Associate professor as well as HOD of Labour Law Department Dr.Sreelatha. The Chief Guest addressed the regarding the gender based discrimination relating to Transgender. She gave motivational speech regarding the hurdles she faced as transgender. The Conference journal was released by the Chief Guest as well as resource Mrs. Prasanna Damodaran, TGT, Department of Social Sciences, Bhavans Rajaji Vidhyashram, along with Mrs. Prasanna Damodaran , Dr. Jasmine Alex, Associate Professor , School of Indian Legal Thought, MG University, Kerala and Ms.Indira , Assistant Professor, VIT chaired the Session as Resource Persons for evaluating papers and paper presenters. They addressed the gathering relating to the theme of the conference. A total number of 120 students’ participated, 25 papers were received from different zones and presented in this conference. The Chief Guest for the Valedictory session was Mrs.Devi Krishna, Chairman Women Membership Development; RI Dist.3232. The Chief Guest addressed the gathering relating to gender discrimination and different forms of it. The chief guest also appreciated the college for organizing the conference based on gender discrimination.  The international conference winded up with presenting awards for the best paper and presenter. One Short film was displayed and awarded as Best Short Film. International Conference was a grand success with the support of management, participants, students and faculties.

Outerspace treaties and liabilities

A special lecture on "Outer Space Treaties and Liabilities" was organized for the students. The Speaker of the session was Dr. Malay Adhikari, Assistant Professor, SRM University. He is an eminent academician and hold a PHD in space law from JNU, Delhi. The speaker discussed about the origin and development of space programmes all over the world especially in India. He demarcated the space law into cold and hot base on the commercial exploitation. He highlighted the importance of non- anthropocentric activities in space law. He explained about the difference between absolute and simple liability for state parties in respect to the claims involving the objects launched into outerspace. The interactive session was concluded with discussion on dispute settlement, claims commission and current developments in Space law.

The special lecture was delivered by Ms. Maria Joseph, Assistant Professor, SRM University, Kattankulathur, Chennai. The guest speaker introduced the concept of legal research methods followed by a comprehensive insight into thw process of conducting an effective research. This was followed by enumerating the different types of research designs and their implication. The session was interactive as students actively paricipated in the dscussion and clarified their queries with the resource person.

First Saveetha Law and Inter-disciplinary Annual Research Summit (STAR Summit 2019) was organised by Saveetha School of Law from 24th January to 26th January, 2019.

The event witnessed high participation from Students and Faculties across the length and breadth of the country sharing their knowledge and legalease.


The inaugural ceremony started on 24th January, 2019 at 9 a.m with lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Mr. M Sesha Sai Mechineni, Honorary Consul general, Seychelles, The Guest of Honour, Mr. YSR Murthy, Registrar, O.P Jindal Global University, Director of Academics, SIMATS, Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy, and Dr. Asha Sundaram, Principal, SSL.


The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy, who talked in depth about the necessity of legal research and the presentation skills for law students and expressed his desire to witness the transformation this event can bring to the students. It was followed by a motivation speech by Mr. M Sesha Sai Mechineni, who emphasised the importance of having a fourfold approach in life namely “to be strong in conviction, think out of the box, love unconditionally and stay positive even in testing time”. Mr. YSR Murthy appreciated the efforts of students and faculties for organising such a jubilant sharing of knowledge and gathering a diverse conglomeration of academicians. Dr. Asha Sundaram delivered the vote of thanks and the inauguration ceremony followed by enthusiastic poster presentations by SSL students and evaluation by Peer and other college academicians.


The second day of Star summit was blessed with the presence of Hon’ble Justice Thiru. K. Raviraja pandian, former Judge,Madras HC who graciously accepted our invitation and agreed to preside over the morning session. His highness recapitulate the relevance of research for a law student and appreciated the efforts of all the stakeholders in bringing positive changes in the realm of legal education.


Mr. Amar Prasad Reddy, Director General - National Cyber Safety and Security  Standards  a noted Cyber Analyst presided over the valedictory function. He talked in length about the perils of social media wreaking havoc in youth’s life. He addressed the issues of data privacy in the light of social media and the problem of youth and women being soft targets for cyber bullying and stalking.


The summit helped the students to explore themselves in various research arenas and presentation. All Students presented two posters each and made minimum five presentations in these three days. All these presentations were evaluated by external faculty evaluators and peer evaluators from different colleges such as Villupuram Law College, School of Excellence (SOEL), St. Peter’s Institute of Higher Education and Research, S.R.M. School of Law, SNGCLS, VIT School of Law,  Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai National College etc. Nearly 300 evaluators from different institutions selected best 50 papers each day. The summit came to an end with the valedictory ceremony, during which 150 best E-Poster Presentations were awarded with certificate, medal and a trophy by the Chief Guest of the day Dr. Amar Prasad Reddy, Director of Academics – Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy and Dr. Asha Sundaram, Principal SSL .
