Youth Parliament 2026

On 16th and 17th September 2026, a two-day Youth Parliament Event was organised by Saveetha School of Law under the coordination of Prof.Dr. Reshma Soman.N, with 10 students from various colleges in Chennai. The event provided practical exposure to parliamentary procedures, democratic deliberation, legislative debate, and decision-making. The programme began with the Speaker’s arrival and the Oath/Affirmation of Allegiance by the newly elected Members. Session 1 debated mandatory voting in National, State, and Local Self-Government elections, followed by voting. Session 2 covered the Delimitation Bill, 2026 and Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, with participants presenting positions, arguments, counterarguments, and voting. Session 3 focused on One Nation, One Election, discussing simultaneous elections, governance, electoral administration, democratic participation, and constitutional aspects. Session 4 involved a hypothetical mega-tsunami in the Bay of Bengal, with Government and Opposition Members discussing disaster response, rehabilitation, healthcare, infrastructure, coordination, and citizen protection. Session 5 debated penalties for MPs who fail to fulfil major manifesto promises, focusing on electoral accountability, practical and legislative limitations, and democratic responsibility, followed by voting. Throughout the event, participants followed parliamentary discipline, respected opposing views, addressed the Chair appropriately, and communicated effectively. The programme promoted democratic dialogue, accountability, freedom of expression, constructive disagreement, and civic participation. Awards were presented to the highest-scoring participants: Best Parliamentarian – ₹2,000; Best Orator – ₹1,000; and Best Opposition Leader – ₹1,000. Overall, the event provided valuable experiential learning while developing confidence, discipline, communication skills, and civic responsibility.
