Mr.Vedhavel, who is currently working as an advocate in BHF Legal, had delivered a lecture on the topic Clinical Trials in India. It was a very new topic so we were eager to learn. Firstly he started by explaining about what is a clinical trial and explained about ethics in clinical Research and unethical practices that are happening. He started the lecture by giving us how the clinical trials have evolved and also stated few of the first events of unethical clinical trials like the Gas chamber incident on Jews. with that said we moved on to the various declarations that were brought to curb these unethical practices as they amount to gross human rights violation. He also gave us a gist about the Helsinki Declaration, Belmont Report etc. With that we moved to the indian scenario, sir gave us detailed information on Clinical Trials in India and how the period between 2000-2006 was considered most revolutionary. We then Discussed about the Ethics Committee, Their roles and responsibility, further about the Drug Controller General of India and his powers. We learnt about the procedure for Human Trials and about Informed Consent Form. Sir gave us realtime examples of violation and unethical clinical Trial practices in Hyderabad and by Johnson and Johnson company. Due to time constraints we were restricted to only a few topics. Overall, it was a very insightful and thought provoking session. We learnt a lot about this area and it was very Informative.
