Legal Awareness Camp

A legal awareness camp was conducted by the Centre for Criminal Justice Research at Shree Bharath Vidyashram, Tambaram on 02.03.2022. Asst. Prof. Aswathy Prakash G- Head of the Centre and Asst. Prof. Anuradha accompanied by Mr. Leelesh Sundaram and Ms. Madhumitha gave legal awareness on cyber security for the high school students. As an introductory note Prof. Aswathy Prakash has explained about cyberspace and various cyber offenses taking place there. In the said awareness lecture, the students were also given an idea as to how to maintain digital etiquettes and how cyber crime actually occurs, with realistic examples which was welcomed by the students and teachers largely. Following which Mr. Leelesh Sundaram had explained and created awareness on the offense of online grooming, how children becoming a victim and how to prevent the same. During the course of the said awareness Mr. Leelesh Sundaram also shared tip and techniques on steps to be taken when a person encounters and becomes a victim to online grooming. As a result of this session the students had not only gained awareness on the offense of online grooming but also gained confidence as to  how to seek remedy and justice, if they ever come across such incidents in future. As a part of the awareness programme, Ms. Madhumitha explained about cyber obscenity, its causes and effects, in a child friendly manner, which was widely welcomed by the students as they gained awareness on the offense and the challenges arising out of the same. Ms. Anuradha explained why it is important even for the children to know about the laws of our country as ignorance of law is not an excuse as per Indian laws. On the concluding note the team also gave tips about how to be safe online and how to report cyber crimes, offline and online. The session immensely helped the students to gain awareness on cyber security. The said awareness not only helped the students to be aware of the offenses occurring in cyberspace, but also imparted practical tips as to how to protect themselves online, which is essential for the present society as the cyber offenses targeting children are increasing day by day. The session was attended by around 45 students and teachers from Shree Bharath Vidyashram. The event concluded by vote of thanks by Ms. Anuradha, who appreciated the management of Shree Bharath Vidyashram for their exceptional coordination and efforts in providing a platform for creating an awareness on cyber offenses against children.
