Educational visit to the State Human Rights Commission

On 8th January 2026, the Department of Business Law, Saveetha School of Law organised an educational visit to the State Human Rights Commission, in which around 60 students participated along with faculty members Ms. Jayasaranya and Ms. Keerthana. The visit gave students valuable exposure to the practical functioning of human rights institutions.

The programme included two engaging sessions. The first session was conducted by the Legal Department and was addressed by Mrs. Bhaama, Assistant Registrar of the State Human Rights Commission. She explained the concept of human rights as protected by law, with reference to Section 9, and spoke about the role of the Commission in protecting the dignity, liberty, and equality of individuals. She also discussed the types of petitions that can be filed before the Commission and highlighted how institutional mechanisms help address violations by public authorities through inquiry, recommendations, and remedial measures.

The second session was led by Inspector Kanchana from the Investigation Department, who spoke in detail about women’s safety and crimes against women. By sharing her real-life experiences of handling serious cases such as rape and murder, she helped students understand the gravity of such offences, the challenges faced during investigation, and the emotional and psychological impact on victims. She used pictorial representations to make the session more impactful and engaging.

After this, Ms. S. Mallikha, Inspector General, delivered an informative talk on important provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), especially focusing on procedural safeguards relating to the arrest of women and the importance of strictly following legal procedures.

Overall, the visit was highly interactive and insightful, enabling students to understand the practical functioning of investigative agencies and the real-world application of legal principles.
