An Overview on Intellectual Property Rights

Mrs. P. Ilanangai delivered this webinar on the topic - Overview on Intellectual Property Rights. The session was attended by about 75 students from various years. The student coordinator started off the session by giving an introduction of the speaker. Then the speaker started her session on the overview of Intellectual Property Rights. The speaker covered all the basic aspects of IPR such as Patent, Copyright, Trade marks, Designs and Geographical Indication. She explained about the history and the present act followed by each right such as Patent Act, Copyrights Act, Trade Marks act, etc. She gave interesting examples for all types of rights such as KFC infringed as KEC or KCF, GOOD DAY infringed as GUD DAY or GOOOD DAY, one product having all rights such as a CoCo Cola bottle having patent, copyright and trademark. She briefed us on WIPO - World Intellectual Property Organisation which was established in 1967 and has its HQ at Geneva, Switzerland. We were shocked to know that the first patent was granted in the year 1421 for Barge with hoisting gear used to transport marble. The patent law evolved from Venetian law, 1474. The Patents Act had its latest amendment in 2005. She explained us about the advantages of the rights as in related to the number of years of the ownership granted to a person. She also explained about the remedies available under the act in case of infringement of the rights. She concluded the meeting by summarising all the rights in short sentences. The students raised questions such as copyright infringement in Youtube, registration of rights, products of different nature having the same name, etc. which were answered by the Speaker.

The student coordinator concluded the meeting by thanking the speaker.
