THE WORKSHOP - “THE ART OF STORYTELLING”

“The Art of Storytelling" one week’s Workshop was conducted from 24.07.2023 to 29.07.2023 at Saveetha School of Law premises. It was organized by Prof. Dr. Asha Sundaram, Principal, SSL, and the Convener of the event. The Faculty Coordinator was Dr.Frederick Ruby Helen, Assistant Professor, Department of Humanities & Social Sciences. It was a comprehensive and dynamic programme designed to enhance students' storytelling skills. The workshop was piloted by Retired Professor Dr. Violet Miranda, an extensive and wide-ranging experienced Professor from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.

During the workshop, students were introduced to various storytelling techniques, such as narrative structure, character development, and the art of captivating the audience. Through interactive activities and group discussions, they had the opportunity to practice crafting and delivering their own stories. It was an engaging and enlightening experience for the participating students. The workshop aimed to develop students storytelling skills and empower them to become effective communicators.

On the first day (24.7.23), the focus was on the "Power to Engage," where students learnt the importance of captivating the audience through compelling narratives. They were introduced to various storytelling techniques, including the use of vivid descriptions, emotions, and pacing to create engaging stories. On the subsequent days, students delved into "Compiling Story," where they explored the art of structuring and organizing their narratives effectively. The workshop covered key elements like Character Development, Plot Progression, the use of Dialogues and Persuasive narratives with literary references and legal advocacy; in order to bring stories to life. Students learnt how storytelling plays a crucial role in the legal profession and how lawyers can effectively use narratives, real-life examples, crafting compelling opening statements, and building a cohesive narrative for their clients, to present the cases persuasively.

On 26th July 2023, “The Art of Storytelling" workshop focused on the effective use of Evidence and Data. During this session, students’ learnt the art of incorporating evidences and data into their stories to support their narratives and make them more compelling. The workshop emphasized the importance of using credible sources and presenting information in a clear and concise manner to engage the audience effectively

On 27th July 2023, “The Art of Storytelling" workshop explored on the non-verbal aspects of communication and how it relates to storytelling in different Legal Settings. During this session, students explored the significance of non-verbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, tone, voice modulation and Intonation of voice in effective storytelling. They learnt the techniques of these non-verbal aspects which complements and reinforces the verbal content of the narratives, adding depth and emotional impact to their storytelling.

On 28th July 2023, the workshop focused on Ethical Considerations in legal storytelling, emphasizing the importance of truthfulness and integrity. During this session, students explored the Ethical dilemmas that can arise while using storytelling in the legal profession. They discussed the responsibility of lawyers to present truthful and accurate information while advocating for their clients. The workshop highlighted the significance of upholding ethical standards and maintaining integrity in legal storytelling.

 

The Valedictory Function was the culmination of the students' hard work and dedication throughout the workshop, celebrating their growth as storytellers and communicators. It provided a platform for them to showcase their newfound storytelling skills to a supportive and appreciative audience. Overall, the valedictory function was a grand celebration of storytelling in all its forms, showcasing the power of narratives to connect, inspire, and entertain. It marked the successful conclusion of the workshop, leaving a lasting impression on all those who attended the event.
