An overview of protection of children from sexual offenses Act 2012

On 9th December, 2020, a webinar on ‘An Overview of Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012’ was conducted by the resource person Mrs. Adhilakshmi Logamurthy, a practicing advocate and a social activist. She gave a brief introduction of the POCSO Act and discussed about various sexual abuses faced by children. She then gave insights of a survey which revealed that more than half of the children in general population face some form of sexual abuse at least once. In addition, she highlighted the insufficiency of the Indian Penal Code in protecting children from sexual abuse, which in turn gave way to the implementation of POCSO Act in 2012. Furthermore, the objectives, offences and punishments under the act were discussed along with few criticisms. The session was informative and much needed for law students given the recent increase in crimes against children.
